Woodworking By Kranich

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men

The "Kranich Angel Clock"

This Grandfather clock is a Shaker style, and is modeled after a clock made in 1802 by Eli Terry  in Plymouth, Connecticut.  The original  is kept in a clock museum in Bristol Connecticut.  This antique clock, if it could be purchased today, would be worth more than $12,000.

The original had a one day wooden movement with a printed paper dial.  The clock was made out of pine wood.  A painted grain pattern was added to it to make it look like it was made out of an expensive hardwood.

This Grandfather clock is made out of New Zealand clear pine.  The movement is a new brass seven day German clock movement fashioned after the early metal Grandfather clock movements.  It strikes a bell and counts the hour.  Every half hour it rings one time.  The face is a special design by Bob.

The “Kranich Angel Clock” is made in three sections: the base, waist and hood.  The waist bolts to the base by two machine bolts inside the waist.  The hood slides on the waist and is captivated by the brass screw mounted rear cover.  This is for easy movement and shipping.  To move some distance or ship the clock, the movement has to be taken out and carefully packed.  It then has to be carefully reassembled during set up.

This clock has antique style glass set into the hood and waist doors.  It is stained with a water based Oriental Ginger color and finished with 3 coats of satin Polyurethane.  The clock is handmade.

Enjoy my clock,

God bless,

Making the “Kranich Angel Clock”

Wood working has always been a fascination for me.  The quality a  Grandfather clock requires is a real challenge.  It is during the construction that you find out that a 64th or a 32nd of an inch can be too much or too little!  The staining is much more difficult because of the details required.  Even so, watching the project come together can be very rewarding.  Every Grandfather clock is in itself a work of art.  They are handmade, therefore no two are exactly the same.  I have decided to build a few more of these clocks as I have available time.  They will be limited editions.
